Throughout my life and career, my family has poured into me, encouraging me to use the gifts that God has given me.
My mom was the biggest soccer supporter in my life growing up. She took me to all of my practices and games, always showing up for me. Now, and for the past 14 seasons, she has gone on a prayer walk before every game and sends me a message of comfort and encouragement. Her role has been hugely important to me, making me feel covered and cared for, without fail.
My brothers have been great sounding blocks and processors for me. They’ve allowed me the space to vent but have also provided wise counsel and gently corrected my attitude and perspective when it has drifted.
My dad, who planted seeds of faith when I was younger, continues to be a source of strength for our family.
My wife, Sally, prays with me before every game, speaking protection and peace over me as I step onto the field to compete.
Because of their support, I feel like I go into games covered and free to play at my best, knowing that whatever happens, it is all working for my good. I can trust that no matter the outcome, it’s for my benefit and will bring glory to God in some way. He is sovereign over it all.
As I enter a stage in my career where I am older and more experienced, I have the opportunity to relate to and help younger players on the team who are going through some of the same struggles I went through earlier in my career. I’ve realized that the adversity I faced in my past has equipped me to be able to lead and impact the players around me today.
Just like my family has given me the support and advice I needed, I can now do the same for others in my life. I’ve experienced the gift of being poured into, and now I’m discovering what a gift it is to pour into others as well. In the emptying of myself, through time spent, conversations had, and selfless service, I am filled with something the world can’t provide.
Challenge
Who in your life has poured into you? How can you thank them today for that gift?
Who has God placed in your life to pour into? How can you be intentional about investing in them and their gifts this week?
Summary
Walker’s story reminds us that a life with God doesn’t stop with personal growth—it overflows into the lives of others. Through the encouragement he received and the challenges he faced, God prepared him not only to compete but to lead, mentor, and invest in those around him. When we walk closely with Jesus, our lives become a channel through which others can experience His love and truth.
