In 2012, while I was playing at Ajax, I suffered a serious knee injury. Up to that point, I had been healthy my entire time at the club. I played consistent minutes and had an important role on the team.
As a man of faith, at first I was encouraged despite my injury, believing that all things work together for the good of those who love God. But when a setback takes longer than expected, that initial encouragement begins to wear off.
During this period, the Lord tested my heart. I was faced with the question: Is my identity rooted in football or is my identity rooted in Christ?
Challenging times force us to check where our hearts truly lie. They show the difference between what we say we believe and what we truly believe. They help us see if anything in our hearts has taken God's place.
When I returned from my injury, I was so excited to be back on the pitch. But I was soon faced with another challenge. For a reason beyond my understanding, the coach refused to play me. It became so serious that the coach couldn’t even speak to me, and he sent me down from the first team to train with the youth team.
I was shocked! I didn’t know what I had done to deserve this. I had been one of the best, most consistent players on the team, and now I wasn’t even invited to training camp.
In this difficult situation, I had to go back to my foundation: purpose. What was God’s purpose for me in this season? Rather than allowing this trial to influence my thoughts, attitudes, and prayers, I had to ask myself a different question. What was God’s purpose for me in this struggle?
Everyone expected me to act in a certain way, to go to the media, or to speak poorly about the coach and the club. This was a true test of my character. Would I do what others thought I should do or was I going to be a reflection of God? Would I let frustration take over my heart or would I walk in love?
It’s easy to proclaim your faith when everything is going well. When I was playing in every game and attracting the attention of the media, I could speak about God with joy. But the test of a true Christian is how we reveal the gospel in our most difficult moments.
Now, I look back on that season with gratitude. I realized that because I was in the youth team, I could tell younger players about the Lord. If I stayed with the first team, I would have missed that opportunity. The Lord opened a door for me to be a witness for Him through my greatest disappointment.
Challenge
What doors might God be opening for you in the midst of a challenging season?
How can you continue to honor and glorify God when things don’t go according to plan?
Prayer
“God, even when things aren’t going my way, I will choose to trust you. When my character is being tested, I will lean into the truth of Your word. Help me face every challenge with a heart of love and gratitude. I believe you are opening doors in unexpected places as you work all things together for good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
